Turning Day at Woodcraft

May 28, 2005

Our friends at Woodcraft opened their showroom to the Chicago Woodturners on May 28th, providing six lathes for us to turn on. Over a dozen members of our club were there, making chips, turning projects, and enjoying the camaraderie. Projects ranged from pens to sculpture; magic wands to bottle stoppers. A display table was on hand, with great turnings and a spectacular tool rack from club VP Phil Brooks. Phil, why don't we see your work on the gallery table?

We had a great time turning together, sharing opinions on such diverse subjects as how to chuck Glulam blanks, the many possible angles of spindle gouge sharpening, and whether Woodcraft’s favorite son, Rob, should wear safety glasses. The photos will tell you that safety glasses won out! Rob demonstrated an affinity for the dreaded skew, showing no fear and making himself a nice bottle stopper. The stopper had no evidence of a spiral catch, and sanding started well above the 80 grit that most first time turners (and some seasoned pros) commence with.

The turners present not only turned projects, they spent time talking with Woodcraft customers, introducing them to the joys of turning. A few customers even took their lead from Rob, and laid chisel to wood. All of the members present took the time to explain turning and the role of the Chicago Woodturners, and I believe there were a few converts.

There will be a repeat of this event in October, and all of you are invited to participate. An afternoon at the lathe, conversation and discussion with our turning friends, and the opportunity to promote the art and craft made for a special day. Our thanks go to Woodcraft for inviting us, and thanks to all of the turners who participated. Be there in October, you'll enjoy it.
