Curls From the President’s Platter
By Paul Shotola

By the time this issue of our newsletter reaches you, your board will have met to discuss the purchase of a new lathe. I have received input from a great many of you. All of your thoughts and opinions count, and will help your board make a decision, or at least a recommendation, that will benefit the largest number of our members. We plan to make a presentation at the June meeting.

The June meeting (on the 11th) will be the last one before the AAW symposium in Providence. Paul Cavanaugh has offered to deliver our Spin Tops for Charity to the AAW, so the 11th will be your last chance to participate in this worthy cause. My thanks go out to all who have turned a top or two (or a dozen) for charity.

Our May meeting was very exciting. Mr. Ray Lier, from the Del Mano Gallery in Los Angeles, handled our critique. Del Mano is known as one the premier galleries for woodturning and wood art, and turners the world over aspire to be represented by them. I say all of this to remind everyone that Ray has credentials. He seemed to be impressed with the quality and vision of the work on the table, and couldn't find one foot or bottom that had been finished with a belt sander. Even Richard Raffan admits to his early work being finished off this way. Ray's comments were constructive and showed a balance between the importance of technical skill and form. You can be proud to be associated with a group who can produce work of this level, month after month. In fact, I see the quality of your work improve every month. I credit this to our demonstrators, mentors and gallery critics. All of these people strive to help you improve your turning abilities and your appreciation for form and shape.

Speaking of demonstrators, Steve Sinner packed about 10 years of research, experimentation and practice into a demo that only lasted 45 minutes, or so. As skilled as Steve is as a teacher, that's just not enough time to convey all of the knowledge that he wanted to share with us. As happens so often, the demo, since it is the last part of our meetings, gets squeezed for time. The solution? As suggested by some of our members, we will be dividing the gallery into two sections. Turnings on the main table will be critiqued and discussed, while turnings on the side table will be on display, but not formally discussed. This should save some time, which can be devoted to the demo. I'm certain that the informal discussions will be as insightful as the formal critiques. So, if you want your work publicly evaluated by one of our resident experts, bring it to the main table. We'll try to keep the pace up on the business part of the evening, also, as the critique and the demonstration are the most important learning tools we have.

My new email address is: p.shotola@attbi.com

Please update your address books, and feel free to drop me a line. I welcome all of your comments and suggestions.

Minutes of the May 8, 2002 CWT Meeting
by Marie Hunter

The turned piece there — it isn’t much
A bit wood and glue and such
A coat of varnish — rather thinnish
And just 8 months from start to finish

I'd like to take credit for that little bit of whimsy, but I actually purloined it from my husband (Bob). And if you think “purloined” is a big fancy word, wait till you see the next fancy word (I'll warn you when you get there).

President Shotola opened the meeting with the standard announcements, then thanked all the folks who turned in spinning tops. There is still time to make a top or two. He will collect them at the June CWT meeting. John Bobik brought in 15 tops. But that doesn't let 14 of you off the hook. Paul brought up the problem with the club lathe, and asked everyone to respond with a phone call, e-mail or written note. He wants input from every member with ideas on how to solve the problem. He has 18 responses so far, but he needs more.

Members agreed to have a show-and-tell table as well as the critique table. Even if you don't want to put your project or turning in the spotlight, you can bring it to let others see what you are working on, or have finished. We are all interested in seeing each other's work.

Wayne Bernahl gave the Treasurer's report. Paul Pyrcik gave a rundown of demos in the works. The demo for the May meeting is by Steve Sinner. Steve will demo how he puts images on his vases and bowls, using metal leaf. Marie Anderson will demo miniature turning at the June meeting. Carole Floate will share her technique for marbling at the July meeting.

Binh Pho has some great publicity. His work is on the cover of the latest Woodworking Magazine, home page of the AAW website and he has an article in AAW with pictures in color.

The drawing for the educational grant was held. It was decided to give out 2 grants. The first name drawn was Dennis Sullivan and the 2nd was Pixie Eslinger.

Harris Barbier introduced 2 new members. We had 1 guest.

George Watestraat showed off the new cabinet the club purchased. George will get his reward in heaven for managing to assemble the cabinet. His thoughts on where the designer of the cabinet should spend eternity does not include the word “heaven.” George also mentioned 2 new Alan Batty tapes and some new books that are in the library.

Carole Floate reminded the group of the upcoming day-long demos. Binh Pho on Sunday June 23. Then Escoulen on Sunday July 28. Bonnie Klein will be here September 28 and Mike Hosaluk is scheduled to appear in October.

Bruce Anderson has the tapes of the Paul Fennell and Mike Mahoney demos for those of you who ordered them.

Marie Anderson gave a report on the Northwest Cultural Council and left brochures on the table for those interested.

Thanks went to Darrell Rader and George Watestraat for the Mentoring session before the meeting. The new microphone is an improvement.

It has been decided that the club should tape the demos for the club library. The raffle was held.

It was our pleasure to have Ray Leier of Del Mano Gallery in Los Angeles as guest critiquer. In addition to the critique, he gave comments on the gallery business and SOFA, and told how AAW got its start. He emphasized that it is important to support AAW, Collectors of Wood Art, and Woodturning Center.

Now about that fancy word that I warned you of — are you ready for this? The word is chatoyancy. It was casually thrown our way by Ray Leier. Look that one up in your Funk and Wagnalls.

Binh Pho mentioned a book Scratching The Surface — Mike Hosaluk $25.00.

Then on to the demo by Steve Sinner. Steve supplied a 4-page overview and instructions on how he makes those beautiful vases and bowls. He has the patience of Job and a ton of discipline. It was a great demo. Let's hope some of Steve's talent rubbed off on us.
