Curls From the President’s Platter
By Paul Shotola

No limits. Endless possibilities. Diverse outlooks. Multiple views. Different styles. Varied skill levels. That’s what makes woodturning and the Chicago Woodturners so fascinating. Turning is such an individual and personal endeavor, and yet we all have the desire to learn, to teach, to produce quality work, and to share our ideas. Your personal participation in the Chicago Woodturners is both the fuel and the motor that keeps woodturning growing, and makes it such a uniquely satisfying endeavor.

Your personal participation in the gallery, demonstrating, set up and clean up at meetings, running the cameras, writing articles for your newsletter and your web site, mentoring, serving on committees, all of these things keep our club interesting, informative and expanding. Have I mentioned your personal participation? I will, soon, I assure you.

August is the time to begin work on the CWT Collaborative Challenge entry.
Most of you know what the Challenge is about, so I won’t bore you with a rehash. If you’re in need of more info, go to www.woodturner.org for details. In the past, Chicago has wowed the turning world with its entries, and it’s time to do it again. My January ’02 Curls column said: “Chicago should compete in the AAW Collaborative Challenge. We have the skill, the artistic vision, and the resources needed to enter a first class project…Collaborative is the key word.” I stand by that statement. At the August meeting, be prepared to lead or at least collaborate on one of the committees to research, design, and implement your 2003 Collaborative Challenge entry. The woodturning world is watching, and your personal participation will make it happen.

The August meeting will be preceded by a mentoring session. This is your chance to receive individual guidance from a club member who feels that their personal participation can make a difference. Mentoring starts about 4:30pm. Bring your questions, troublesome tools, and contrary wood, because our mentors are there to help you learn and grow. It will be your personal participation that makes the session worthwhile.

Did I mention your personal participation? I will again, I assure you.

Until August, turn lots, share your skills, and turn safely.
Paul Shotola

Minutes of the July 11, 2002 CWT Meeting
by Marie Hunter

Paul Shotola opened the meeting with the usual announcements and thanked the club members for supplying 90 tops for the A.A.W. charity cause in Providence. He also thanked Paul Cavanaugh for delivering the tops to Providence. Paul S. recruited volunteers for the July 28 demo which will be done by Jean-Francois Escoulen. It was disclosed that CWT members donated
special turnings which brought in approximately $3,000 for A.A.W. at their auction. Applause for those members.

Dealin’ Darrell Rader showed the piano hinges, door slides and cabinet hinges which are for sale at a really good price to help pay for the new lathes. Darrell claims to have been an industrial arts teacher a while back, and then after a time in the Air Force, he became a commercial pilot. Rumor has it that those claims are false, and that Darrell was really a used car salesman. So beware if you are going to the picnic scheduled for September 14th at his farm. He's got some old used cars in his Morton building and he might just try to sell you one. By the way, it's time to get turning on the croquet ball and mallet that you will need to get into the big tournament at the picnic.

One member remarked that there were 25 well known turners at the symposiuum at Provo, Utah, and that 3 of those turners were from our own club. Listed in alphabetical order, so as not to play favorites, they are Pho, Sing and Sinner. But for those of you who prefer they be in alphabetical order by first name, they are Binh, Dick and Steve. Darrell Rader received a tool rest (free) from a man in Texas who will be selling the item for $34.00. The tool rest will be in the library for the use of CWT members. Bruce Anderson has the Mike Mahoney and Paul Fennell tapes for those of you who ordered them.

There was a discussion of liability insurance in the event someone gets injured using CWT equipment or while watching a demonstration by a club member or A.A.W. member. Marie Anderson invited CWT members to put a crafted wood item into a wood show which would be taking place in the near future. There were 6 visitors at the meeting.

Carole Floate mentioned the Jean-Francois Escoulen demo Sunday, July 28, and the Bonnie Klein demo Saturday September.

George W. thanked Dick Sing for donating a copy of his newest book to the CWT library.

There was no Treasurer’s report as Wayne Bernahl was missing. If you see Wayne’s picture on a milk carton, it will be a happy picture of a smiling Wayne, carrying a large piggy bank.

Dan Anderson did the gallery critique. But he also impressed the members with the importance of turning pieces for the gallery table, which was a bit scarce. And as usual, the witty comments from the audience made the critique a fun thing.

Carole Floate did an interesting demo, showing her marbelling techniques. She had some young folks trying their hand at dipping wood into the paint and gel compound. Thanks to Carole for a job well done.

CWT needs someone to do a demo for the October meeting. All other bases are covered for this year.

CWTC Picnic
The early fall CWT family picnic is back by popular demand! With something for everybody, it should be another resounding success. We will gather at the Rader farm north of Woodstock, Illinois at 10:00 a.m.

On September 14th and indulge ourselves in the following:

  1. An all day turning frenzy on as many lathes as we can muster – the novices can try with no fear and the pros can show off. An eggcup race is a certainty.
  2. A croquet ball and mallet challenge. Your technically perfect editor informs us that a regulation ball is 3 5/8, but your slightly lopsided host says, "There are no rules!!" Novices have at it and bring something sort of round and something else to hit it with.
  3. Bring a dish to pass and at noon we will have a sumptuous meal with the club furnishing pork chops and chicken breasts on Jay Randall’s monster grill.
  4. After lunch we will have another great time with a "show and tell" of what ever you think others might be interested in seeing. Again there are no rules and things other than woodturning are encouraged.
  5. A tailgate swap meet will be ongoing for those so inclined.
  6. If none of the above interests you, enjoy Marlene’s flowers, the creek, or the antique cars, truck, tractor, and….stuff. The OneWay will be available for anyone wanting to give it a try.

Mark your calendars and reserve the day, then come early, stay late, and enjoy the fellowship without being limited by time. It’s YOUR day!
