Curls From the
Presidents Platter By Paul Shotola
Thank you. I mean that, sincerely. Being asked to serve
as your President for an additional term is a great honor, and a responsibility
I take seriously. My plans for the next two years include Wait a
second, folks, this news bulletin just came in:
Held Over! Two additional years! By Popular Demand! Hurry, hurry, hurry, as this may be your last two years to see Paul
Shotola as President of the CWT.
Join him every month as he presides over the greatest show in woodturning.
Watch him balance budgets on a razor edge and tame wild gallery critics
with a crack of the microphone cord. See him produce volunteers out of
an apparent vacuum! See committee heads jump through hoops! Ringside seats
still available! Don't be left out, order yours now. Contact the membership
chairman to reserve great seats and board and committee positions now.
Skybox memberships go on sale January 1, 2004.
Sorry for the interruption. As I was saying, its an honor to again
be asked to preside over such an interesting and varied group such as
ours .hold on, heres another news flash:
From the World Desk at the BBC in London, we interrupt this program
to bring you this news update: In an apparent landslide victory, possibly due to the lack of opposition,
Paul Shotola has been re-elected to another term. His campaign platform
of Your Personal Participation has apparently struck a chord
with the membership, uniting most of the prevalent factions: New members,
long-time members, and members from Iowa. As one member, wishing to remain
anonymous stated: Well, if hell do it, I guess that's ok.
Sorry. Boy, these interruptions are annoying. Where was I? Um, right.
Over the next two years, our club, with your help and participation can
provide all of you with the demonstrations, education and community outreach
that .Sorry, hold on once more, here's another bulletin:

for their services, and have indicated so by checking the $
column.

Minutes of the November, 2003 CWT Meeting by Marie Hunter
November CWT Minutes Paul Shotola opened the meeting
with the house rules. Fran Islin is looking for someone to
do the demo at the January meeting. Wayne B. gave the Treasurers
report and Andy Kuby gave the membership report. Currently we have
195 paid memberships. 75 member were at the meeting as well as 2 guests.
They are Patrick Podstawa from Antioch and KeithSchreiter
from Round Lake Beach.
Club members will be doing a Turnaround at Woodcraft on Saturday, December 6th.
Club T-shirts are available for $10.00 Binh Pho is trying
to get demonstrators lined up for the all-day seminars for 2004. David Ellsworth
is on tap for October. He also has a turner from the South Pacific area
who should be here in June. His name will be listed in a future newsletter.
If you have any suggestions for turners you would like to see, let Binh
know. Some suggestions were made. Binh also mentioned the book Wood
Art Today. He is able to get it at a discounted price. If you are
interested, contact Binh. A copy will be ordered for the club library.
George W. showed a remote that he uses with his dust collector.
Oliver B. is in charge of the holiday party at the December meeting.
Here is the plan. Bring party food. And, if you are ambitious, turn a
holiday related item. Prizes will be given for the top 3 winners. There
will also be a gift exchange of items related to woodturning, valued up
to $20.00. If you covet someone elses gift, you may be able to steal
it away by exchanging your gift for his gift when your number is called.
And Paul S. tells us there will be some door prizes. Oliver was
hoping someone would provide decorations for the party. If you can help,
contact Oliver.
Nominations for President and Secretary were held. Paul Shotola
was nominated for President and Paul Cavanaugh was nominated for
Secretary. So we have the Paul-Paul party running and Id be willing
to bet they will win by a landslide, unless someone pays enough to buy
the election for write-in candidates. The election will be held at the
December meeting.
Paul S. mentioned that members are hiding their light under a bucket.
He wants members to tell the group when they will be doing demos, so folks
will have a chance to see the demo.
The Hardwood Connection will have an open house Nov. 22. Dick Sing
will be doing a demo there. Dodie Baumgarten is trying to get the
Field Museum to feature a woodturning demo. At the present time, the museum
is doing some remodeling. She may get some action next year. Steve Sinner
had a turned piece in an International Invitational Show which was held
in South Korea. He won an engraved trophy. Maybe we can get him to bring
it to a meeting for display. He didnt mention this prize at the
meeting, but his good friend, Jim Brooks, let us know. Nothing
bashful about Jim. Thanks, Jim. Glenn McMurray showed an additive
which absorbs UV rays and is said to keep wood from losing its color.
He has small bottles of it available for $5. Darrell Rader
brought in some Arrowmount catalogs.
The raffle was held. Darrell Rader did the critique. Dennis Sullivan
brought in 3 pieces and not one of them had any rusty bolts or old
water pipes attached. It seems as though Denniss inventory has become
depleted. If any of you are remodeling and are ripping out old plumbing,
keep Dennis in mind. And did any of you catch the soft W.C.Fields sound
that Darrell emitted a couple of times. Maybe Darrell has a hidden
talent. Hey, Darrell, dont hide your light under a bucket. Oliver
Buettner did a demo on stone cutting. I missed the demo, but Fran
and John Islin told me that Oliver discussed the stones that are
available and showed the tools he uses. He provided a comprehensive guide
to stone cutting and gave a full description of the processes and techniques
involved in the cutting, polishing and mounting of the stone. The audience
showed their appreciation. Oliver convinced them that stone cutting would
be a worthwhile project to try in their workshops. Dont forget the
holiday party.
Wood artist Steve Sinner has won a Special Citation and trophy
in the 2003 International Cheongju Craft Biennale held in September in
Cheongju, South Korea. His winning work, entitled Dancers And Warriors
II, is a 27 inch high by 9 1/4 inch diameter maple vessel featuring
figures of dancers and warriors in silver leaf and patina. It represents
the continual struggle between opposing elements of human nature. Competition
was open to artists worldwide. Over 200 artists were chosen in ten categories;
23 were from the United States. Additional information on the competition
is available at http://www.cheongjubiennale.or.kr/main/htm/contest-finaljudging.htm.
Sinners work is featured at MidCoast Fine Arts Gallery
West, Rock Island, Illinois through October, and will be represented
by del Mano Gallery at SOFA Chicago 2003.
