Curls From the President’s Platter
By Paul Shotola

In July, woodturners from all over the globe descended on Overland Park, Kansas, to participate in the American Association of Woodturners' annual symposium. More than a few of those turners came from the City of Broad Shoulders, the City that Works, the City of Da Bears.

We came to the Land of Oz not only to marvel at the instant gallery or the participants in the Collaborative Challenge, but to make a difference in the future of turning. To participate in Bonnie Klein’s youth workshops was the real reason for a 500 mile journey to a place with a climate even tougher than ours. However, the journey was rewarded. Ask any of the dozen or so CWT members who mentored young turners that weekend. They will tell you that there is no greater fun to be had at the lathe than teaching young, appreciative turners the basics of the art and craft of woodturning.

Members of the AAW (that’s all of you, right?) have the fall issue of “American Woodturner”, and no doubt have seen the three published photos of your own club Secretary in action at the workshops. Look again, I’ll wait for you. If you’re not an AAW member, run out to the library or bookstore and get a copy. I’m patient. Back so soon? Good. Paul Cavanagh’s hands are featured in three photos. Are his hands the important part? Nope. It’s his heart, which is shown in all of the photos. Page 15, bottom right has one of the greatest turning photos I have ever seen. That is what “hands-on teaching” is all about.

We don’t need to travel to a scheduled event to carry the art of turning forward. Opportunities abound, if we just look for them. Do the neighbor kids wonder what you are doing in that garage? Is there a Scout troop at the local school or church? Do you think a young person might enjoy turning as much as you do? Can you make a difference? Are you a good enough turner/ teacher/ mentor to share your skills and your passions with the next generation? The answer to all of these questions is an absolute, resounding Yes.

What’s next? Get off the couch, open your shop, look for the young ones with questions, and help the next generation of turners along. You can stay in the City that Works, and take young turners to the Land of Oz. A journey worth taking.

Until October, what more can I say, but to please turn safely.

Review of Binh’s DVD #1

Minutes of the Chicago Woodturners Club Meeting on September 13, 2005
 By Paul Cavanagh

President Paul Shotola opened the meeting at 7 pm. The usual house and safety rules were described.

VP Phil Brooks is coordinating CWT’s participation in the semiannual Wood Working Show at the Odeum on Oct 14-16. He passed around a sign-up sheet with 2-hour blocks of time for the three day event. Volunteers get free admission.

The CWT Picnic is on 9/17 at Darrell Rader’s. The club will provide the meats and soft drinks. Bring a dish to share. One of the many features this year will include a pig roast. Also a chainsaw carver will be there. Come and eat your fill. See the current newsletter for directions.

The next guest demonstrator is Don Derry on Oct 22. Come and see this dynamic turner and his colorful designs.

Paul Shotola stressed that the CWT will participate in the 2006 AAW Collaborative Challenge. Please e-mail your ideas for a project to him.

The gallery was reviewed by none other than our own president, Paul Shotola. He had a nice collection of gallery items of various designs.

Raffle conducted by Mike Molloy, including CWT T-shirts, a nicely seasoned large block of ambrosia maple, a Binh Pho DVD, and some tools.

The demonstration was performed by Dan Anderson, from log to bowl. It covered all aspects from selecting logs, cutting blanks, seasoning, and turning.

Notice of The Woodworking Show 2005

The annual Woodworking Show is scheduled for October 14 - 16, 2005 at the Odeum, North and South Halls, 1033 N. Villa Ave., Villa Park, IL. It’s always a good place to get the latest information on woodworking as well as providing excellent buys for those much needed tools. Show times are 12-7 on Friday, 10-6 on Saturday and 10-4 on Sunday.

This year the Chicago Woodturners will be sponsoring a free booth at the show. We will be exhibiting finished pieces of our work in addition to doing demonstrations. This effort is conducted in accordance with our goals of expanding the joy of woodturning to the general public.

Free passes to the show (parking not included) will be provided for everyone participating. Booth duty has been assigned in 2 hour increments, with 2 -3 people per increment. As you can see from the chart below, there is a slot from 4:00 - 6:00 on Saturday where no one has signed up yet.

Anyone wishing to support their club can sign up for any of the blank spaces on the sheet below, by contacting Phil Brooks at 847-548-6477 or brooksphil@sbcglobal.net. Because of insurance reasons, you must be a member of AAW in order to take part in the lathe demonstrations (but is not required to man the booth). Because we were late in getting the material for the show we only have a week before we have to submit a list of participants, so sign-up now.
