Curls From the President’s Platter
By Paul Shotola

Heat got you down? Humidity making you wilt? Do you wish your ’“Studio” was in the basement, and not the garage? If you’re not getting any lathe time, maybe you’re just bored, uninspired. Well, there’s no need for that. Inspiration is all around us. The dog days of summer have provided us with demonstrators, symposiums, and more demonstrators. There’s no lack of turning this summer.

This past weekend we had Chris Stott demonstrate for us, and if you missed it, well, you missed a good one. Boxes and small vessels turned quickly, efficiently and elegantly. In Chris’ book Turned Boxes, 50 designs, the forward by Keith Rowley cautions the reader to not think of Chris as “dour and humorless”. His humor is as dry as the Sahara, but his turning is first rate, and his techniques efficient and graceful. Turn a box in 2 minutes? How about 45 seconds, and the lid is a pop fit. The best part? No measuring of top to bottom. Really. You should have been there.

Being there this week means going to Kansas, Toto. As I write this, we’re packing for a road trip to the AAW symposium in Kansas City. Your AAW board searched far and wide to find a spot just a little hotter and a little more humid than Chicago in July, but we’re still anxious to get on the road. Cook, Rosand, Wolfe, Klein, and a bunch of turners I have yet to meet. The weather will be secondary. The turning will be primary.

And in August, Rolly Munro will demonstrate for us, right here in our comfortable, always 68 degrees, bone dry meeting space. The end of August brings the American Craft Exhibition in Evanston. Now we’re into September, with the CWT picnic at Rader’s Ranch.

So you’re hot? Wilted? Bored? Look around, there’s inspiration and education all around you, and all happening this summer. For relief from the summer blahs, join in, attend a demo, craft show, and above all, use that new found inspiration when you stand at the lathe. The doldrums don’t stand a chance. And as always, please turn safely.

Subject: ICE

In Case of Emergency Due to the recent bombing in London, there has been a tremendous push to launch the national “In Case of Emergency” (ICE) campaign. As you know, many people were injured in this bombing. Many of those injured were found with their cell phones. First responders used the injured person’s cell phone to try and locate a family member that they could notify on the injured persons behalf. However the rescuers found it difficult to locate the appropriate person. Wireless subscribers are now being asked by Public Safety Officials all over the world to store the word “ICE” in their wireless phone address book and put their next of kin's phone number next to it. In the event of an emergency, this person would be contacted quickly by ambulance and hospital staff. It’s just that easy! (Source: BBC News) Please take a moment to program someone that you would like to be contacted in case of an emergency into your cell phone with the word “ICE”.
Public Safety officials around the world will know what this means.

Minutes of the Chicago Woodturners Club Meeting on July 2005
 By Paul Cavanagh

President Paul Shotola opened the meeting at 7 pm. The usual house and safety rules were displayed by video on the big screen.

The next guest demonstrator at CWT will be Chris Stott on Saturday July 17 only, not as previously identified as a two day demo.

Rolly Monro will be here on Aug 6th.

On 8/25 The Arts Council of Evanston is having an exhibit.

Dotie and Lee Baumgarten have graciously invited CWT members to view their collection of woodturning art at their home in Winnetka on (I hope I got this date correct) 8/7 between the hours of 2 and 4 PM Please call first to let them know you are coming.

CWT will have a booth in the Wood Working Show at the Odeum in October. Phil Brooks will coordinate it and is looking for people to work the booth, do some turning, etc.

Raffle was conducted by the team of Fran Islin and Marie Anderson. It included a lot of nice pieces of wood and some tools.

Anyone who is interested in doing a demonstration of any aspect of woodturning or related areas, such as carving, finishing, decorating, etc., please contact VP Phil Brooks. No experience necessary.

The gallery was reviewed by Steve Sinner. He had lots of insightful points on the design of the nice collection of gallery items.

The demonstration was conducted by Grant Barlow and his wife Diane. It covered identifying trees that grow in Illinois (and hereabouts). They had a very interesting slide presentation that covered a million years but concentrated on the last 5000 or so. No one left early because we wanted to see how it turned out. For those that missed it, I won’t give away the ending.
