Curls From the President’s Platter
By Paul Shotola

This past weekend, Bob and Susan Rosand traveled all the way from Pennsylvania to demonstrate and teach for our club. Aside from being a great turner, Bob is a six-year veteran of the AAW board, a frequent demonstrator at symposiums, and a contributing editor to the AAW journal, “American Woodturner”. The Rosand’s generosity toward our club was inspiring. All of the pieces Bob produced at the demo (including the Osolnik candlestick parts) were donated to the CWT, along with a custom made ¼" skew, and the Rosand’s even made a gift of a signature Christmas ornament to our friends at Woodcraft. Everyone who attended the demo or class came away with renewed inspiration for turning.

Allow me to back up a moment. Bob is a “contributing” editor to the AAW journal. That means he, well, contributes articles on a somewhat regular basis, sharing his knowledge with all of us. Very generous. There are many members of your club who also contribute on a regular basis. A partial list includes: The folks who set up for meetings, run video, provide the printing for this newsletter, host our website, maintain the website, keep track of membership, balance the checkbook, make coffee at the demos, donate wood to the raffle, solicit contributions to the raffle, run the raffle, hook up lighting, run power lines for lathes, install upgraded motors and controls for our lathes, make sure there are cups and napkins at the demos, maintain the club library, and take out the trash. Whew! It takes a village to run a woodturning chapter.

You, dear reader and CWT member, are part of that village. If you recognize yourself in that abbreviated list of contributors, thanks from all of us. If you don’t feel you are a contributor, it’s not too late. Everyone is invited, no matter if you are a founding member or joined us last week. You will notice that none of the tasks I listed involve actual experience at turning. This means that your turning skills are secondary to the contributions you can make by simply volunteering when a task or project needs your help.

At our next meeting, I will undoubtedly ask for a volunteer or two for some project. Members who have been regular “contributing editors” will be asked to put their hands down to make room for you to step up and help your woodturning club. There are no minimum skill levels, no age limits, no previous experience needed.

Until June, think about becoming a "contributing editor", join the village, and please turn safely.

Minutes of the Chicago Woodturners Club Meeting on May 2005
 By Paul Cavanagh

President Paul Shotola opened the meeting at 7 pm and explained the usual house and safety rules.

ERRATA There was an error made in the minutes for last month that incorrectly identified the new Tool Librarian. It should have named Francisco Bauer. Mea culpa.

The winning bid in the auction of the ¾ HP motor and the AC controller was $250. Thanks to all who participated.

The next guest demonstrator will be Bob and Susan Rosand on May 21st. Volunteers to provide refreshment are: Paul Cavanagh will bring donuts, Darrell Rader will provide ice and a cooler and Mr. Johnson will create the elixir of life (also known as coffee). Thanks to all of them.

Paul Shotola reiterated that Turning Days at Woodcraft will be May 28 and Oct 15, 2005. All members are encouraged to come down and make some curls and friends on those days. Teach someone to turn.

The club also has a new state of the art computer and some powerful software thanks to Phil Brooks.

Membership. Andy Kuby announced that we have 3 new members and 3 visitors.

Raffle was conducted by Paul Pyrcik and included some very nice pieces of walnut, a Sorby gouge, and a Richard Raftan book.

Anyone who is interested in doing a demonstration of any aspect of woodturning or related areas, such as carving, finishing, decorating, etc., please contact VP Phil Brooks. No experience necessary.

The gallery was reviewed by Chuck Young who did a splendid review, especially from the videographers point of view since he held the pieces steady. He had lots of insightful points, too.

The demonstration was conducted by Binh Pho on turning thin walled vessels. It is always great fun to watch a master at work.
