Curls From the President’s Platter
By Paul Shotola

One of the great pleasures of serving as your club president is the opportunity to write this monthly column. Each month, my intent is to inspire all of you to turn a little more, turn a little better, become a little more involved in your club, and become a little more aware of the art that is woodturning. The goals I set out for you are the same goals I set out for myself. These past few months, I’ve had the opportunity to attend the AAW symposium, mentor young turners, spend time with a club demonstrator, and enjoy a collection of turnings and artwork that left me breathless. What I haven’t done, these past few months, is “Stand at the Lathe”.

If I’m going to write about turning, I should actually do some turning, right? The city of Highland Park thought so, taking down an Elm tree, and neatly stacking the 12" diameter logs by the curb. The city fathers were kind enough to cut the logs into sections that I could actually lift by myself. An old friend apparently thought I should make chips, too. A nuisance of a Mulberry tree was cut to length and lined the parkway as I cut through the old neighborhood on my way to another friend’s home. Is it Karma? It’s close enough for me. Gas up the chainsaw, sharpen the gouge, and make some shavings!

What did I make? Roughed out bowls and box blanks. All green, and all set aside to dry. Not one finished product, but bushels of shavings. As I worked these log sections, I pictured the results a year from now, and contemplated works of art and turning wizardry like I had seen in Kansas City, recent club demos, and Lee and Dodie’s home (more on this next month). So I turned. When the shavings got about a foot deep, I felt I could write a column for you, but not until then.

Until September, turn a little more, turn a little better, make a big pile of shavings, and please turn safely.

Minutes of the Chicago Woodturners Club Meeting, August 2005
 By Paul Cavanagh

President Paul Shotola opened the meeting at 7 pm. The usual house and safety rules were described.

Paul also gave a brief report on the recent AAW Symposium in Kansas City and provided the Arkansas chapter’s entry into the annual Collaborative Challenge. (If you did not attend the CWT Meeting in August, you will get a chance to see it again in future meetings.) He also challenged the membership to do better and submit an entry for 2006 in Louisville.

On 8/25 through 28, the Arts Council of Evanston is having an exhibit including a turning demo on 8/28. Paul needs one volunteer to help him move our mini lathe.

Dotie and Lee Baumgarten have graciously invited CWT members to view their collection of woodturning art at their home in Winnetka on 8/21 between the hours of 2 and 4 pm. Please call first to let them know you are coming.

The CWT Picnic is on 9/17 at Darrell Rader’s. The club will provide the meats and soft drinks. Bring a dish to share. One of the many features this year will include a pig roast. Also, maybe the CWT band and a chainsaw carver. Come and see.

CWT will have a booth in the Wood Working Show at the Odeum in October. Phil Brooks will coordinate it and is looking for people to work the booth, do some turning, etc.

Library
Binh Pho donated copies of his two new DVDs. Thanks very much, Binh. We all appreciate your generosity.

The gallery was reviewed by guest demonstrator Rolly Munro from New Zealand. He had lots of insightful points on the design of the nice collection of gallery items.

Raffle conducted by Mike Molloy, included CWT T-shirts, a nicely seasoned large block of wood, and some tools.

The demonstration was conducted by Rolly Munro. It covered turning a hollow form using Rolly’s unique tool.
