Curls From the President’s Platter
By Paul Shotola

Thank you for allowing me to serve another term as your President. Your support tells me that most of you feel that the Chicago Woodturners is serving your needs as a club. We're a diverse group, with members that were there from the club’s inception in 1987 to over 40 members joining us in 2005, and that diversity is just one of the many challenges that make the job interesting. Challenging: yes. Dull: never.

I’m fortunate to have the help and guidance of a dedicated board and committee staff, plus the “personal participation” (I've used that term before, look for it again in the near future) of many members. It’s gratifying to see newer members step up and participate in the projects, tasks and activities of the club. Participation in your club is key; the more you participate, the more the club provides what you need. Thanks to all of you for your help and guidance over the past four years.

At our home, we have a few rules for the Granddaughter. Hey, she’s two, some rules are needed! We originally started with three rules, and they were all “don't do this” kind of rules. Don’t slam doors; don’t touch Grandma’s breakables, that kind of thing. I decided that she needed a fourth rule, and that rule is: Have fun! She can recite all four rules, in order, but when she gets to #4, her eyes light up and that smile fills the room. I think that your club needs to emphasize the fourth rule: “Have fun!” On that note, to start the New Year, here are some folks having fun with the lathe. Enjoy, thank you, and please turn safely.
