The Chicago Woodturners held an open turning demonstration at the Woodcraft store in Palatine, IL this past November 30th. This is the second year we have demonstrated at Woodcraft, and judging from the turnout, it will become an annual event. Over twenty club members spent the day turning, talking turning and promoting turning at the store.

The club (in cooperation with Woodcraft) set up five lathes in the store showroom, and turned a variety of projects, ranging from Holiday ornaments to bowls, boxes, and (courtesy of Gary Hubbard) strange and wonderful winged vessels. Laser guided deep hollowing was demonstrated, with John Eslinger showing us how the Jamieson system works. Note: Lyle Jamieson will be demonstrating for the CWT in 2003. Paul Cavanaugh not only brought the donuts, he turned a number of his signature mushrooms. Past President Darrel Rader demonstrated his techniques for ornament making, brought in an impressive display of his finished work, and spent a lot of time helping the spectators to take their first turn (sorry about the pun- I blame Bruce Anderson) at a lathe. Mike, Harris, Dan (where was Marie?), Dennis and many more all contributed to make this a special event. Throughout the day, spectators were three deep in front of the lathes. That says a lot about our demonstrators and the art/craft of woodturning.

Our thanks go to Andy Kuby, event coordinator and promoter, the staff at Woodcraft, and everyone who donated their time and effort to making this event a success.
